Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic $15.93 Leave it to Prince to put the best music of Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic, his return to major-label status, on a hidden track. That would be No. 18, a.k.a. “Pretty Man.” A deep-fried groove and sax by guest Maceo Parker underpin a hilarious mock self-celebration (“I write a check and the bank bounce”) that proves the Artist can flow at full power any time he wants to. And whether Rave will prove as … |

The Mississippi – River of Song [VHS] $39.99 Even casual jazz and blues fans know those seminal American styles journeyed north from New Orleans and the Deep South, along the Mississippi River. But that tributary’s penetration into the nation’s heartlands, and its passage through a much broader, more diverse array of cultures, affords a richer portrait of how root musical styles have merged, diverged, recombined, or survived against the pote… |

Render – Spanning Time with Ani DiFranco [VHS] $2.99 Render isn’t a documentary or concert video, but a combination of the two–bathed in the casual intimacy of a home movie. In the 2002 film (directed by Hilary Goldberg and DiFranco), the folksinger is shown backstage with her band, in rehearsal, in concert, in the studio, etc. The highlights are the vibrant live performances from Austin, Texas; Knoxville, Tennessee; and New Haven, Connecticut. The Book of Drugs: A Memoir $8.69 Mike Doughty first came to prominence as the leader of the band Soul Coughing then did an abrupt sonic left turn, much to the surprise of his audience, transforming into a solo performer of stark, dusky, but strangely hopeful tunes. Radical Harmonies $14.92 This song-filled documentary from filmmaker Dee Mosbacher traces the origins and evolution of the “women’s music” genre, from its folk-rock roots in the ’60s and the roles women played as performers, technicians and executives to the influence of the feminist and gay rights movements. Featured artists include Cris Williamson, Meg Christian, Holly Near, Mary Watkins, Indigo Girls, Ani DiFranco, and… |

Punk is a term that’s been kicked and beaten into every shape and form since it was first coined in the ’70s. Originally a subculture with few defined norms, it’s now a word weighed down with baggage.
But you can wipe all that over-analyzing out of your head when it comes to Against Me! This band is punk, hands down, no further need to question it.
So what is it about their music that allows them to inhabit the core of what’s punk? Their energy, their fast, loud angry style and the shouted vocals that hearken back to the days of Black Flag.
The band formed in 1997 in Gainesville, FL. At the time, frontman Tom Gabel was 17 years old and playing gigs as a singer/songwriter. Eventually, he would be joined by guitarist James Bowman, drummer Warren Oakes, and bassist Andrew Seward. They’re music would typify a return to the loudest of the loud in punk, a style that had fallen out of favor in the mainstream as punk was sanitized and pop-punk became more popular. Elements of anarchism lent the band a distinctive bent, with socially conscious songs included among their repertoire.
When they finally released a debut full-length in 2002, Against Me! is reinventing Axl Rose brought them considerable attention from critics and general punk fans alike. Like the tradition they rise from, the band’s first album was filled with swagger and grit. More than anything, their songs are about living life to its fullest and not holding back; one song on the LP was entitled “Scream Until You’re Coughing Up Blood.” The lyrics, predictably, have the same intense philosophy of carpe diem: “So this is how it’s gonna stay?/I think/I would rather/Remember how it was and go our separate ways/I don’t feel anything/Unless we are living and dying for each other/Every second of our lives.”
To date, the band has released four full-length records. They’ve stood out from many other bands of their ilk because of their politics and the earnest belief that music can change things. Looking for something intense and different? Get Against Me! tickets today.
Written by Andrew Good and sponsored by StubHub the place to buy and sells sports tickets, concert tickets, theater tickets and more to just about any event in the world. Don’t miss Against Me! tickets.
Ani Difranco Questions
Which song is this by Ani Difranco?
Ani Difranco wrote a song about abortion. Can anyone tell me what the name of it is?
Ani has written a few songs about abortion.
One of my favorites — “Tiptoe”
the fetus holding court in my gut
and I’ve an appointment on Tuesday
to shed uninvited blood and tissue.
I’ll miss you,
I say to the river,
to the water,
to the son or daughter I thought better of
“Hello Birmingham”
It’s written in response to the 1998 bombing of an abortion clinic in Birmingham
As well as “Lost Woman Song” mentioned above.
Which Ani DiFranco album should I buy?
I already have her 1st CD, Little Plastic Castle, and Not a Pretty Girl.
Dilate. Starts with untouchable face and only gets better from there. I think its her best by far. If you enjoy Ani Difranco, you will enjoy this album… and vice versa. If you don’t like this one, you just don’ t like Ani Difraco. Dilate definitely
