Batman Forever Original Questions
Isn’t the new Batman series 10 times better than the original Batman series from the 1990’s?
I remember back in the early 1990’s when the first Batman movie came out with Michael Keaton. I enjoyed it. It wasn’t a bad film … and I have to say the same for it’s sequel Batman Returns. I think Tim Burton did a good job on those two films. It wasn’t until Batman Forever and Batman & Robin came out, is when they became crappy. Joel Schumacher really just made those movies crappy big time. But I have to say, when I first saw Batman Begins … wow, I was truly amazed … and the same goes for Dark Knight! Christopher Nolan is truly an amazing director. The plot, narration, choreography, soundtrack, acting … everything was just truly well thought out and just mind blowing! Is not the new series of Batman ten times better than the original series?
i love the new series of Batman and i love the fact that they’re stickin w/ same actors througout all the movies so far, especially Christian Bail as Batman, who’s an amazing actor!
ps. i’m also amazed w/ how great of a freaking job Heath Ledger (R.I.P.) did as the Joker, he’s unrecognizable in that movie, i’ve never seen an actor get into the role as great as he did.
I want to start reading the Batman comics, but there’s so many of them…Where can I start?
I’ve been really getting into Batman lately.
I have a DVD with every episode of the original 60s Batman that I’ve been watching, and I plan on watching all of them. (That’s what got me hooked, lol.)
I’ve seen the Dark Knight of course, and I’m going to watch all the other Batman movies also. (Batman Forever, etc.)
But I really want to get into the comics. Thing is, I know that the original series is still going on, and that there’s 700+ issues of it. I don’t have the money, or time, to buy and read all of those. I know that there are other Batman comics, and separate stories, too. I basically want to get into the newer comics, but I still want to know the background on all the characters and villains and stuff, which I would think is in the original series that’s still going on.

Contrary to popular belief, the recent relaunch of DC comics isn’t a reboot, at least not for all characters. Flagship character Superman has been rebooted to be more like the Silver Age incarnation and Captain Atom and Blue Beetle have also been rebooted but as for characters like Batman, he hasn’t been rebooted although Detective Comics is much like Action Comics depicting Batman’s early years, it’s much like the Legends of the Dark Knight comics. I wouldn’t recommend picking up any of the new 52 batman books without first reading the essential stories from the past. The nice thing is that most of Batman’s continuity is from post crisis so anything before Crisis on Infinite Earth’s is no longer totally canon. the only reason to read Silver and Bronze Age comics is for villain backstories like the Penguin,The Riddler, The Ventriloquist, Scarecrow, Poison Ivy, Mr. freeze, the first two Clayfaces, Ra’s al Ghul, Killer Croc etc. Joker, catwoman, Two-Face, Bane, Hugo Strange, Hush have had new origins post crisis that are in the essential comics like Year One, Long Halloween, Knightfall, Prey, etc.
The first two books one needs to read are Frank Miller’s Batman Year One and Dennis O’Neil’s The Man Who Falls, both depict Bruce’s early years after the death of his parents, his travels, his training and his first year in Gotham as Batman. Year One also depicts Gordon’s first year in Gotham and Catwoman’s origin.
The next book to read is The Man Who Laughs by Ed Brubaker. It’s the first encounter between Batman and the Joker.
The next story to read is Jeph Loeb/Tim Sale’s The Long Halloween which depicts the batman. Gordon and Dent taking down Gotham’s mobs and Dent becoming Two-Face which is one of Bruce’s greatest failures.
The sequel to Halloween is Dark Victory (also written by Loeb and illistrated by Sale) the last of the early essential Batman stories to read. it depicts how the events of the last book have affected Bruce and Gordon, and the theme of Gotham going from being run by the mobs to being overrun by the “freaks”. It also depicts the origin of Dick Grayson and has a sub plot that has a major effect on Catwoman’s character.
After those stories, you could either read stries from the Legends of the Dark Knight collection like Prey or Gothic which are set after Dark Victory but still in Batman’s early years. Or you could read the stories that have affected the current Batman stories.
New Teen Titans #39 is the comic where Dick decides to no longer be Robin. Subsequential issues have him take up the identity of Nightwing.
A Death in the Family depicts the Joker killing the second Robin, Jason Todd. It also depicts a recurring thought by Bruce to kill the Joker. There is no need to have to read Jason’s origin because the storyline tells that in flashbacks. Jason’s death is considered another of Bruce’s failures that still affects him to this day. Reading this also makes the ending of Hush make sense and the story Under the Hood, Battle for the Cowl and The Dark knight Returns.
Batman #436 and subsequent issues tell of Tim Drake’s origins.
Moore’s The Killing Joke- one of the best Batman stories written. Again, it depicts the Joker’s affect on Bruce, Gordon and Barbara Gordon. It’s often another event referenced by Bruce when contemplating killing the Joker. It was also given to heath Ledger as a reference for the TDK Joker and influenced the writing of the character instead substituting Dent for Gordon but sticking to the theme of one bad day can turn even the best man into someone like the Joker.
For anyone going to see The Dark knight Rises, these stories will be used as influences:
Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns- depicts a possible future where Bruce gives up being Batman only to return. it’s sequel is The Dark Knight Strikes Again but isn’t as good as TDKR.
Knightfall- Bane defeats Batman and severly injures him where he has to be replaced. I’d also read Vengenance of Bane and Sword of Azrael which are tie ins to Knightfall story arc.
