Ledisi Carries the Torch
A clear, brassy, powerful voice fills the room and in an instant you know what the ladies and gents of the 1940s must have felt listening to Ella Fitzgerald singing “Blues in the Night.” But open your eyes and what you’ll see is perhaps Ella reincarnate in the body, spirit and voice of sometimes-jazz, sometimes-blues vocalist, Ledisi (pronounced led-duh-see).
There are no flat notes hidden under computerized tracks or smoke and mirrors used to disguise mediocre talent. Ledisi is the real thing, and although you may not recognize her name, hers is a voice you’ll definitely want to add to your musical rolodex.
Until now, Ledisi has had a quiet following of loyal fans, mostly in the Bay Area and abroad. She’s been rocking clubs and intimate venues across the globe for a decade, gaining momentum on the underground music scene. Her first two albums, Soulsinger in 2000, and Feeling Orange but Sometimes Blue in 2003, were released on the LeSun Music label, a company Ledisi founded with her creative partner Sundra Manning. Although she’s gotten high praise and accolades from some of the industry’s top brass, she has yet to receive measurable mainstream notoriety, a fact that doesn’t seem to bother her in the least.
“If I focused on what is main stream and what isn’t, I wouldn’t stay in the business. My focus is on putting out quality music,” Ledisi said. “It’s up to the record company to make sure people see me mainstream. I’m happy for the fan base I do have.
“It’s like faith; when there’s few there will be many. You just get more and more people to believe. They’ll get it when it’s time, and when they’re supposed to get it.”
But as the saying goes, what happens in the dark must come to light, and now that Ledisi has signed with her first major label, Verve Records, the world is finally getting to see the glow some have basked in all along. Her new album, Lost and Found, is already generating a buzz among old and new fans alike. She’s veered away from her signature style slightly and believes the project shows how much she’s grown. She hopes her core audience will grow with her.
“I think with this record they [fans] aren’t used to me being so grown, meaning so calm and not as loud and boisterous, but I’m reaching another audience. Keep supporting me and come out to shows and I’ll give you more.”
Ledisi, who was born in New Orleans but grew up in Oakland, isn’t fazed by commercialism and she doesn’t measure success by the typical industry standards. She may not have reached Billboard yet, but Ledisi was hand-picked to perform on the Luther Vandross tribute CD, Forever, For Always, For Luther, where she sang My Sensitivity (Gets in the Way). She also gave a soul-stirring rendition of “Blues in the Night” for the We Love Ella compilation CD, a project especially befitting the young star since she’s often hailed as a contemporary version of the jazz legend.
To Ledisi, things are happening right on time. She believes the timing is perfect for her new relationship with Verve and says she probably wouldn’t have handled this type of success as well ten years ago.
“I’m a little more mature now and a little more content with myself and way more knowledgeable than I was back then,” Ledisi said. “Most artists, they come in fast and they’re not prepared and they don’t know their voices yet. They grow up in public for people to see who they are. If they get it like that, that’s great, but [they should] sit still for a minute to figure out who they are. I’m grateful for my experience and grateful for the time because I’m more together now. I wouldn’t change a thing.”

I am looking for the name of a really nice Luther Vandross song that was played on an episode of the show Step by Step. It was the episode where Dana ends up at the apartment of some sleazy guy and gets uncomfortable with his sudden advances.
