Charles - What we’re talking about tonight is actually something that I don’t think that anybody has talked about before which is how to survive a carjacking with multiple attackers. And I know that you have experience in this. What on the top of your head are four things a person needs to keep in mind if and when confronted with this particular situation?
Andy - I would tell anyone to keep in mind with combative situations in a car or when you car is under attack would be -
#1 – Awareness
#2 – Controlling The Attackers’ Weapon
#3 – Using The Vehicle As A Weapon
#4 – Always Find The Quickest Available Escape Route
Charles – Okay, let us talk each one of these four steps. The first one you gave us was awareness. Give us an example of how one might exercise awareness.
Andy - Ah, first of all, you got to know your location. And there is a lot of ways you can find out what your location is. You can MapQuest where you’re going. You can actually recon where you are going by checking it out before hand. Or by word of mouth, you can ask anybody, if you know where you’re going in advance, what they know about the location. That’s one way of being aware. Another way of being aware would be to always be using your mirrors–your rear view mirror, side mirrors and keeping your head on a swivle.
Charles - Now, already lets say the worst has happened, and you have an attacker that’s making his way into the car. For whatever reason, you missed a cue, or they took you by surprise. You said in Step 2 – Controlling the Attacker’s Weapon. Give us an example how that may be executed.
Andy - Well, first of all, you have to be aware of a weapon. Awareness comes in to play again. Did you see the weapon coming? Did you see any bulges in the suspects pants or shirt or whatever? Once you are aware of the weapon, you can immediately figure how to control it, i.e., actually grabbing the weapon, if it’s a gun, preventing the hammer from going back with either an automatic or single action gun, controlling the knife, grabbing the weapon hand, I mean, any number of techniques to literally control the weapon–or disarm it.
Charles - Okay, then so the first thing you would be doing would be actually grabbing and controlling the weapon, and of course if it is a gun, aiming the barrel of the gun out of your way of being hit.
Andy - Yeah, out of my way of being hit.
Charles - Now take us to number 3. You said using the vehicle as a weapon. That’s sounds interesting. How would you do that?
Andy - Well, you can use the vehicle as a weapon, or you can actually use it to escape. I’m assuming that you can escape. You can get control of the weapon or the attacker and drive away with the attacker outside of the vehicle. If you have attackers inside of the vehicle, you can accelerate on the gas. Slam on the brakes, throwing the emergency brakes. Do any number of evasive driving techniques, of course making sure that there are no pedestrians or oncoming traffic. And you can actually thrash the attackers around inside of the vehicle which cause help you to cause them to lose control of the weapon, or actually cause damage to the attackers themselves.
Charles - Wow! And what was number 4?
Andy - Always find the nearest available escape route?
Charles - Now, what does this mean?
Andy - That could mean anything from, the minute you see an attacker, stepping on the gas and getting out of there. If could mean maybe, the attackers are in the vehicle, and you control the weapon. You may have disarmed them, and I always assume that there is more than one attacker. And you may have disarmed them, and you can exit the vehicle. If it comes down to me losing my life or me losing my vehicle, I’d rather lose my vehicle.

Rear View Questions
How do I remount my rear view mirror?
I have a Ford Focus and the rear view mirror fell off the the arm were it was attached to. The back part of the mirror has a socket and the tip of the arm has a ball. I have tried very hard to push the socket back on to the ball without any luck. The ball and the socket are dry. The mirror was hard to move and my wife pulled a little bit too hard. If I lubricate both parts and I’m able to remount the mirror will it be too loose? Do I need to replace the whole assembly?
Check for a set screw on it. Back off set screw and it should go back on. Have a fun day.
How to replace a rear view mirror?
The rear view mirror on my car was falling off when I bought the car (I didn’t realise it at the time). It’s since fallen off completely and I’ve tried attaching it with those sticky pads, but it keeps falling off. What can I do to replace it?
If the sticky pads aren’t working, there are kits that you can get. It has a bracket that attaches to the window, and the mirror arm slides down into this bracket. Let the bracket sit for a while to ensure a good bond, then put the mirror in. You can get this at any auto parts store.
