Romantic Piano Concerto Questions
Are any Mozart compositions considered Romantic?
I practically worshipped Mozart’s music, then suddenly I came across Beethoven’s 5Th. Piano Concerto, and I realized that Mozart had been surpassed, and that his music did not reach the pinnacle! Is there anything Mozart wrote that can be considered to be Romantic, and thus make me believe once again the Mozart was indeed THE ultimate composer, and that only his untimely death prevented him from developing into the Romantic period?
Mozart wrote a number of things that could be considered “ahead of his time.” His Fantasia in D minor for example exhibits qualities that hint at music to come in the Romantic and perhaps even the Modern period. However, it would be inaccurate to describe such pieces as truly Romantic, as the overwhelming body of such works are substantially Classical in nature.
Your opinion of Mozart, who is undoubtedly one of a tiny handful of truly great composers, is perhaps inflated by a lack of exposure to later and even earlier composers. Beethoven’s Fourth Concerto is equally revolutionary when compared to any of Mozart’s piano concertos – the piano becoming more prominent than in any of the piano concertos preceding it.
Any extrapolation of what Mozart may have done had he lived a longer more productive life, is highly speculative… although one would have to assume he would have continued his development in a similar manner to the rest of his life.
In reality there is no such thing as an “ulitmate composer.”
