As of July, 2009, Barry Manilow has been singing at the Las Vegas Hilton for over 4 years, and has thrilled the public with hundreds of concerts in the large Hilton showroom. At age 66, he’s still going strong. His presence seems to follow in the footsteps of Elvis, who sang at the Las Vegas Hilton for eight years — from 1969 through 1976 — and presented 637 live shows there. Manilow has sold over 76 million records. Thirty-one of his releases have gone platinum. He has performed over 3,000 concerts in his career. The popular music press have conferred awards and titles on Manilow, including the top artist on the “Adult Contemporary” chart. He won the American Music Award for “Favorite Male Pop/Rock Artist” three years running.
Barry Manilow has retained his audience from the 1970’s, and since then he has added many younger fans, too. His new show at the Las Vegas Hilton is called “Ultimate Manilow: The Hits,” and includes many of the almost 50 tunes that made the Top Forty when they first came out. For the rest of 2009, 30 concert dates are spread from the end of July, and then early and late in the months of August through November. Three more concerts are planned for year’s end.
Some of his most famous singles are “I Write the Songs,” “Copacabana,” “Mandy,” “Looks Like We Made It,” “Could it be Magic,” “Can’t Smile Without You,” “We Still Have Time,” “Let’s Hang On,” “Somewhere Down the Road” and “Weekend in New England.” Many of the songs are romantic and explicitly about working out rough spots in relationships. Others, like the rhythmic and upbeat “Copa,” have become trademark melodies associated with the Manilow “brand.”
Manilow has also written music and produced records for the likes of Bette Midler, Rosemary Clooney and Dionne Warwick. As a writer, he has provided songs for musicals and films as well as television. “Ready to Take a Chance Again” (in Foul Play) received an Oscar nomination in 1979.
The Manilow concerts at the Hilton in Las Vegas are always sell outs. When I was about 6-7 years old, my mom had bought a Christmas cassette set. Well we no longer have that. The musians on the cassette included; Bing Crosby, The Andrew Sisters, Julie Andres, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and many more. I was hoping that someone could tell me the name of this album so I can find it again fot the hoilidays this year.
